“My local library branch started doing this “Blind Date with a Book” thing, thought you guys might like it. The shelf was full when we got there, but was like this as we were leaving. The books are wrapped in paper and have different designs on them, and then a few words vaguely describing the subject matter of the book. Things like “Drama”, “Plot Twists”, “espionage”, etc. The only thing exposed on the book is the barcode that you use to scan the book out. I thought it was a pretty cool idea.”

[Writers] change their minds about their own worth and talent somewhere between two and seven hundred times a day.

Your past self is your number one enemy.

shannahmcgill:

Past-you was a terrible writer. Surely you can make your stories better than that!

Don’t compare yourself too hard to other writers. It’s like apples and oranges. Instead, make sure you’re a better writer than you were yesterday. The best part is that as soon as you finish writing anything, a new past-you appears, and you have to improve again.

Fantasy doesn’t have to be fantastic. American writers in particular find this much harder to grasp. You need to have your feet on the ground as much as your head in the clouds. The cute dragon that sits on your shoulder also craps all down your back, but this makes it more interesting because it gives it an added dimension.

What is co-writing?

Co-writing means you and one or more people are writing a story conjointly. Each of you share a load in producing the final product. Some well-known co-authors are Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman with “Good Omens”, P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast of the “House of Night”…

This is a drug reference guide. It’s medically accurate, research and general knowledge based. None of it is from personal experience and I absolutely don’t encourage any drug use. This is simply made for a reference for your writing so that if you’re playing a certain character, taking a certain drug you’ll have a better understanding of how they might act, what they’ll experience internally and the after-effects and medical effects the drug has on their body and mind. I am in no way telling you how to play your character, this is just a few helpful pointers that might help you get to know your druggie a little better.

A very handy guide on different types of drunks. Definitely worth a read if alcohol isn’t your cup of tea, and you’d prefer, say, a cup of tea. - O Also, we have a thing about this that you might want to read as well. You may also find the wealth of knowledge that is Erowid useful. Thanks to moderntrickster for letting us know about it!

I’m linking this as an indirect response to the blogger who wrote a list of what writers should never begin with.

It’s one reason why I’m going to shift the focus of my main blog come 2013.

What writing “rules” do you like to break?
